It used to be that only big businesses felt they were "newsworthy" enough to use a press release to alert the public of their company and its happenings. But, like everything else in today's world, things have changed.
Today, even businesses that are literally a one-man-show are benefiting from press releases. But how do you know if a press release is right for you? Here are a few things to consider:
- Are you doing something newsworthy? Even if it's just you and you alone, are you doing something that the public would want to know about? Are you putting up a website to sell crafts that you hand make in your spare time? If it's a bigger company we're talking about, is there a new product or service your company is launching?
- Is your organization doing something that the public needs to be aware of -- a food drive, a charity car wash, etc.?
- Are you or your company investing in other advertising and marketing campaigns to introduce yourself, a new product or service? If so then you should definitely include a press release package in your marketing plans.
But why a press release?
First, press releases are a quick and effective way to reach a large percentage of the public in one fell swoop. Second, a press release package is cost effective since you can target not only print newspapers and magazines but online news sources and magazines as well.
So, even if you're not a Fortune 500 company, I think after a little consideration you'll find that a press release just might be what you need after all.

I just read a post at eWritings about press releases. Both of you point out something so many people miss - a press release needs to be newsworthy. Too often people/companies think they should send out a press release just because they want media coverage rather than considering how the information is of value to the audience.
Thanks for the suggestions Kendy! We just launched a Press Release Builder Tool to help entrepreneurs build press releases and I linked this post as a valuable resource for our readers.
Keep up the great work!
Evan.
